The most recognized speakers in the history of music, JBL L100 brought levels of performance previously not available in a mass production loudspeaker.
How else would one get VERY LOUD, dynamic, lifelike, clean and musical, all at the same time?
Countless recordings were produced/mixed using these legendary studio monitors and their siblings, JBL 4310, 4311.
Even by today's standards, vintage JBL from 1975-1980 sound so incredibly good, it takes at least triple of that cash to equal them with new speakers. Now, JBL professional monitors are used worldwide in IMAX theaters.
L100 have only two drawbacks, they sound bright when partnered with bright sounding electronics; that can be tamed using Brilliance/Presence controls or by careful component matching. Also, they are aged, the drivers are nearly indestructible, but capacitors in X-overs are at best half dead by 2015. The original paper caps were designed to be replaced after 25 years, with original caps you likely get muddy, rolled-off, dull, suppressed performance, depending on speakers mileage/frequency of use. Those paper capacitors just dry up inside after certain time, that process is irreversible.
So, the original caps were kept in place, the X-overs were rewired, new matched premium Dayton Audio Grade caps were installed. This restoration is reversible, should you wish to compare "before and after" sound.
The difference is huge, it's like removing the wool screen between you and the music, speakers sound so much faster, cleaner and dynamic now, and the sweetness is still there.
Premium U*S*A-made 5-way heavy duty gold plated speaker binding posts were installed in place of flimsy speaker connectors.
The original JBL L100 screens/grilles (foams all gone) will be included. New grille foams are readily available online if you feel like it; I always despised using the screens. These grilles alone are worth at least $130.
