It is amazing that Yamaha could build a budget receiver with such great design and sound.
Just look - there are heavy duty wire link shortcuts on every circuit board, that's to eliminate all extra soldering (which is not reliable and deteriorates sound quality).
This and the presence of linear damping factor high dynamic power low impedance drive capability circuit (damping factor is perfect 100 for this Yammy, that indicates ideal balance of low frequency drive combined with sufficiently low negative feedback, not to offend sensitive ears) is the reason RX-396 got such lovely reviews everywhere on the Net.
I mean, it's a little plastic receiver, but the sound with both CD player and built-in tuner is pure gold!
It's so good, some DIY guys (see link below) try to mod it, with bigger transformers, bigger power supply caps and high wattage output devices, to increase power.
The output transistors here are snobby pairs of Sanken 2STC4467 and 2STA1694. The capacitors are all premium Japan-made, same goes for other parts.
The output signal is clean, precise yet musical, reminiscent of best Harman Kardon designs from 1989-1994.
